Moving to Monument, Palmer Lake or Woodmoor?

Just arrived, or thinking about it? Here's how the Tri-Lakes fits together — the towns, the schools, the parks, and where everyone actually gets their coffee.

The lay of the land

The Tri-Lakes sits on the Palmer Divide, the high ridge between Colorado Springs and Denver, at around 7,000 feet. Three communities anchor it, and they're less interchangeable than the shared "Monument, CO" mailing addresses suggest:

Monument is the commercial center — the historic downtown by the railroad tracks, plus the Jackson Creek and Baptist Road corridors where most of the shopping lives. Palmer Lake is the small railroad-resort town under Sundance Mountain, with its own lake, its own council and its own pace. Woodmoor is the wooded planned community east of I-25 — it uses Monument addresses but isn't part of the town, a story worth reading in the history. One practical note newcomers learn fast: the Divide catches real weather — expect noticeably more snow up here than in Colorado Springs, and keep an eye on I-25's Monument Hill in winter.

Schools

Nearly everything public is Lewis-Palmer School District 38 — two high schools (Lewis-Palmer and Palmer Ridge), a middle school and five elementaries — plus Monument Academy, a tuition-free public charter with two campuses, and St. Peter Catholic School downtown. Getting outside

This is why people move here. Monument Lake, Palmer Lake's recreation area, Fox Run, the Santa Fe Regional Trail running the old rail bed, and 20 parks and trailheads in all — every one with directions in Parks & Trails.

The practical stuff

Groceries: 5 stores including King Soopers, Safeway and Natural Grocers — see Grocery Stores. Health care: clinics and providers in town, with the hospital systems south in Colorado Springs. Utilities and services vary block by block up here — water alone comes from several districts depending on your neighborhood — so your closing paperwork or Town of Monument / Town of Palmer Lake are the authoritative first calls. Fire protection is district-based too; you'll find the stations under Government & Public.

Eating and drinking

47 restaurants, 7 coffee shops and a healthy run of bars & breweries. Start with coffee — it's the fastest way to meet the place.
